Can I talk on the phone line via my laptop modem?
I have an Acer Extensa 4420-5963. I have backgraded it to XP Pro because a necessary application wouldn’t run under Vista. Once I get the question of why the modem is not being recognized by the “Printers and Other hardware” menu flat, I am wondering if I can plug in say a USB headset and call out/talk on my landphone line via the modem?

Not really standard functionality for a modem, no. Modems don’t speak buzz and phones don’t speak modem. Different languages. Alternatively there are VoIP programs like Skype. Same thought as you’re looking for, but using internet protocols rather than buzz signals.
