Get a PCMCIA Network Ethernet Card (If you have a PCMCIA slot on your laptop)
For example:

Another option is getting a USB Network Ethernet Card

u can go to best buy or another electronic store they sell ethernet cards where u can install onto ur computer..they are about $25
does it have usb ports – if it does then you can always get a wireless router and a wireless usb key
You need to buy either a usb ethernet card or a PCMCIA ethernet card. Go to fry’s, they should have it there. Best Buy might involve it, but I doubt it. Just check the box and make sure it supports windows 98. Kinda harder to get now a days… excellent luck.
Here’s a link to one a card made by Belkin….

buy that then switch it with ur part that has buzz jack in it.
open ur computer
unplug the part with buzz jack and slide it out
replace it with the ethernet part slide it in then plug in and u got it in place in the disk that comes with the ethernet part.
now u have ethernet jack in back of computer.
Maybe you can get a wirless PC card and a router.
You have to be careful with the older laptops on what style of PCMCIA slot card will work in it. It can run (1) Type III Cardbus or (2) Type II or Type I Cardbus Cards. And you will ordinarily have to use either the upper or decrease slot by itself for the Type III Card (cannot run another card in the other slot with this type installed)! Or there is a much simpler way!
If you are plotting on running DSL or CABLE, you can buy a “wireless” router and a USB wireless adapter for the 1 USB port you have on the laptop.
OR
You can also buy a USB to Ethernet adapter to convert the USB port on the laptop to a standard CAT5 (RJ45) connection and hard wire it directly to the modem. A company called Farallon has these! I have one myself to hook up customers older laptops.
I have included the link for the Farallon adapter with a fee of under $10.00!
