Why does my Samsung phone split sms up while not reached max characters?

My Samsung D880 dual sim devides my sms messages up into 2 or even 4 separate sms’s even as I place of protection’t reached the max amount of characters of 160.
I have unicode turned off and now it devides into less messages but still to much. Anyone suggestions?
